Adventure from Santa Fe to Amarillo June 4, 2006

We left Santa Fe and changed our route slightly as a result of input from Earl Porter. He suggested we take I-25 north to Las Vegas, NM and turn on this nice scenic 2 lane road that will take us to Tucumcari, NM and onto I-40. Well the ride to Las Vegas was through the San Miguel Mountains with spectacular views. We then turned a hard right in Las Vegas, NM and headed south on NM 104 to Tucumcari, some 100 miles south.

It immediately opened into a high plain area at 7000 feet. This was the first 40 miles. Then we started to climb and then descend all this while seeing maybe 3 or 4 other cars. The descent will cost Earl a new arm rest for my navigator. Kathy did not like the winding 9% grade with a guard rail at times. Her nails and fingerprints are forever imbedded in the armrest.

However, the excitement goes on. We spotted our first coyote of the trip.

After this we arrived in the valley to discover Lake Conchas State Park. Well, we decided that it was lunch time so we pulled in to discover that maybe one of Pop's shortcuts wasn't going to work out.

Opps! Hope the brakes work.

As it turned out it was a great spot for lunch.

Well we made it to Tucumcari after a slight detour etc and finally made it to I-40. After seeing Tucumcari, where Earl was raised, I can understand why he decided on settling in Santa FE.
